iPhone or iPad is slow or freezing

Apple: “If your iPhone or iPad freezes or has performance issues, try these tips.”

iPhone iPad · 7 steps, in Apple's order

Step of 7

You've tried every step

  1. 1

    Check your network conditions

    Didn't fix it

    • Apps often need an internet connection, and slow performance can occur due to network congestion or when a device reconnects to cell towers while moving. Even with a strong signal, you might need to wait, try a different location, or use Wi-Fi. If cellular data issues persist across multiple locations, contact your carrier.

  2. 2

Close an app that's not responding

    Didn't fix it

Apple: “Force closing apps unnecessarily can slow down your device. Reopening a closed app takes longer because it has to reload all its data.”

    • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-click the Home button on older device models).
    • Find the app.
    • Swipe up on its preview to close the app.

  3. 3

    Free up storage

    Didn't fix it

    • iOS and iPadOS automatically manage storage during app installs and updates. They remove items that you can download again or no longer need. To avoid slowdowns, maintain at least 1 GB of free space.
    • Open Settings.
    • Tap General.
    • Tap [device] Storage.
    • Offload the app, which frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data.
    • Delete the app, which removes the app and its related data.

  4. 4

    Turn off Low Power Mode

    Didn't fix it

    • When enabled, Low Power Mode disables certain features or makes them work slower, and the battery icon turns yellow.
    • Low Power Mode can be turned on by going to Settings and tapping Battery. If you need your iPhone or iPad to function without low-power restrictions, consider leaving Low Power Mode off.

    Not too hot or cold

    Didn't fix it

    • When your iOS or iPadOS device gets too hot or cold, it might run slower. To fix this, move it to a more moderate temperature.

    Restart, then get service

If nothing above worked Didn't fix it

    • A touch screen that responds to taps incorrectly can make your device seem slow. If you think that your touch screen isn't responding correctly, try restarting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
    • If your iPhone or iPad touch screen still isn't responding, you might need service.
