Do this first

Mark it as lost now

Apple: “Apple will never contact you to say that your iPhone or iPad has been found. Never share your device passcode, passwords, verification codes, or other account information with anyone who requests it.”

  • When you sign in to icloud.com/find, you can use Find My to locate your devices. Once you’re in Find My, review the list of your devices under All Devices and tap the one you want to find. Then you can play a sound to help locate it, mark it as lost, or erase it.
  • To sign in to icloud.com/find, you don't need a verification code — so you can mark your device as lost, even if it's your trusted device that's lost. If you're asked for a verification code, select the Find Devices button instead.
  • Use the Find My app on another device or a Family Sharing group member's device
  • In the Find My app, go to the Devices tab.
  • Scroll down and select your missing iPhone or iPad. On a Family Sharing group member's device, your iPhone or iPad appears underneath their devices.
  • Tap the More button.
  • Scroll down to Lost [Device], then turn on Lost Mode.
  • Follow the onscreen steps if you want to display your contact information on your missing device.
  • Tap Activate.

Then

  1. 1 What Lost Mode does

    • When you mark your device as lost, your device is put in Lost Mode, which means your device is locked with your passcode, and payment cards and passes that you use with Apple Pay are suspended. You can also provide a phone number and message that allows others to contact you if they find your device.
    • It only appears online and in Lost Mode if the device has been turned on and is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular.
    • If you use Stolen Device Protection for iPhone, Face ID or Touch ID is required to turn off Lost Mode — so even if a person has your iPhone and knows your passcode, they're still locked out of your device.
    • If Find My wasn't turned on for your device before it was lost, it won't appear at icloud.com/find or in the Find My app and you can't mark it as lost or remotely erase it.

  2. 2 Report it

    • Report it to local law enforcement. They might request the serial number of your iPhone or iPad, which you can find even if you don't have the device.
    • Contact your wireless carrier to report your missing iPhone, ask them to disable your account, and file a claim if your iPhone or iPad is covered under your wireless carrier plan.

  3. 3 File an AppleCare+ claim AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss

    • If your iPhone is covered by AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, file a claim for an iPhone replacement.
    • Don't remove your iPhone from Find My or your Apple Account until your claim is fully approved.
    • AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is not available in all countries and regions.

  4. 4 Erase it remotely — only when you have to

Apple: “Don't remove the device from Find My, even if you remotely erase it. Removing the device from your Find My list removes Activation Lock, which will make it easier for the thief to unlock and resell your device.”

    • You can remotely erase your device using the Find My app on another device or at icloud.com/find. But make sure that you've tried everything else to find it, because erasing your device can't be undone.
    • If your device is offline, the remote erase process begins the next time it's online.

  5. 5 Get your number on a replacement iPhone Replacement iPhone with eSIM

    • Setting up an eSIM allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without a physical SIM. In most cases, you can activate your eSIM while you're setting up your iPhone, or you can activate your eSIM after setup.
    • eSIM Carrier Activation usually happens when you purchase from a carrier and you provide your cellular plan details. If a carrier assigned an eSIM to your iPhone when you bought it, turn on your iPhone and follow the onscreen instructions during setup to activate your eSIM.
    • To activate your eSIM after setting up your iPhone, contact your carrier to get a QR code:

  6. 6 Review your Apple Account

    • Make sure that your Apple Account is secure by reviewing your Apple Account information. If you find changes that you don't recognize or didn't make, update that information and change your Apple Account password.
    • On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings, then tap your name. On a Mac, from the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then tap your name.
    • To review your security settings, tap Sign-In & Security.
    • You can review your account information at account.apple.com.
